Survival Guide: Dark Winter Days

December 14, 2021

Short dark winter days are here, and they’re here to stay (cries).

How can we make sure we’re thriving during these dreary days instead of just surviving?

We’ve got the top 7 survival tips for dark winter days!

1. Flowers

Flowers actually have a direct correlation to your mood! Ever wonder why people love spring? The grass starts to grow, trees begin to bud, and flowers are blooming! It’s our bodies natural reaction. That’s why “seasonal depression” is such a thing. When everything begins to die in the fall and winter seasons, it’s natural that the changes in the environment to effect us, mentally and physically.

Keeping fresh flowers in the house during the winter season is scientifically proven to boost your mood and give you the little kick of motivation you need to be your best!

2. Bundle Up and Get Out There!

Sure it’s cold…but that’s what winter coats are for (and hats, gloves, and hand warmers). Make it a priority to get outside during the day before it starts getting dark—especially if it’s a rare sunny day! Even though it may be pretty cold out, the way you’ll feel afterwards is so worth it. Being in nature has the power to increase your energy levels and elevate your mood.

Even if it’s just a matter of choosing a parking space further away from the grocery store or going for a brisk morning walk before your shower—get out there! You won’t regret it.

3. Deficiencies

Check into your vitamin and mineral levels. If you have any deficiencies, your doctor may suggest supplements, especially during the winter months.

4. Sweat it out

Get your workout on! Throw on your running shoes and go for a walk in the morning or after dinner. Set aside 30 minutes to an hour a day to move your body—it doesn’t have to be super intense. Something that gets your heart rate up and those endorphins flowing works wonders on your mental health!

5. Brighten up your environment

Now we don’t mean going wild and changing all of your decor. Start off slow by incorporating some lighter colors. Keep your blinds open to let the warm sunlight in, and purchase a few plants to pepper throughout your house!

6. Candles everywhere

Embrace candle season with open arms! Invest in some tea lights. They may be small, but they’re inexpensive and the best way to change the mood. They smell great, look great, and are a great excuse to get into your comfiest pj’s and watch a movie (or two or three).

7. Stay positive

A positive attitude is the most important thing to have, especially when the environment seems to be against you. Plan some exciting trips or activities for when the weather warms up. This gives you something to plan and look forward to if you start to feel a little down.

Most importantly? Remember that seasons come and go and nothing lasts forever! Spring is right around the corner.
